Stage 4: board-level leaders and managers

This stage supports individuals operating and accountable at the most senior level of their organisation, including executive directors, non-executive directors and board members.

The competencies enable these leaders to set or oversee strategic direction and vision, shape organisational culture, and collaborate with peers and stakeholders to deliver national and ministerial priorities.

Examples of people at stage 4

Programme director for quality and governance in adult clinical services

You ensure that the service division is managed safely, effectively and in accordance with strategic and operational objectives. You promote multidisciplinary team approaches, represent patient need at board level, and embed clinical leadership in services.

Chief nursing officer

You are the executive lead and responsible for the development of all nursing, midwifery and allied health professional roles across your services. You design and lead implementation of the nursing and midwifery strategy. You are a member of the executive leadership team and unitary board.

Chief allied health professional

You are responsible for the oversight of clinical professions and person-centred care across acute, community, mental health and primary care. You unify clinical leadership across allied health professionals to ensure professional standards, regulatory compliance and strategic ambitions are delivered in alignment with national, regional and local need.

Director of corporate affairs

You report directly to the chief executive and ensure the organisation meets the highest standards of governance, regulatory compliance and public accountability. You identify learning to inform service improvement.
