Fundamental stage
Fundamental stage outlines the basic skills and knowledge required of every leader and manager – together with the stage specific competencies – and supports those preparing for their first steps into a management or leadership position by setting out the minimum standard and expectations for those managing or leading in healthcare settings.
Examples of people at fundamental stage
Medical secretary
You provide administrative support to the clinical team through checking letters, calling patients, organising clinics, writing minutes and coordinating the multidisciplinary team. You are keen to progress into a line management role and utilise learning and development opportunities as they will help you take the next step in your career.
Emergency care assistant
You work alongside clinicians responding to emergency calls and providing care such as controlling bleeding and treating wounds. You enjoy the fact that every day is different and your shift pattern works for your personal commitments. You would like to continue the role you have, but improve some personal and team working skills so you can be the best you can in it.
Health care assistant in mental health
You are new to healthcare and would like to learn more about best practice within the NHS and what’s expected of you and the people you work with. You are still getting to grips with the various IT systems, and you want to ensure you are inputting information accurately and efficiently.
Community therapy support worker
You proactively assess patients and address issues that contribute to function, mobility and social needs to reduce avoidable admissions. You would like your shifts to be aligned with your supervisors so that they can support your development into a qualified therapist and take on more management responsibilities.
